The RunWay Bride

Every season, the bridal designers debut their latest collections in New York. There are numerous designers, but from those, there are a select few whose collections are always eagerly anticipated, much sought after by brides, and often imitated by their competitors. These are pieces from the six most influential bridal gown designers.

VERA WANG
For revolutionizing wedding gowns.
There is no woman who has had a greater impact on modern American weddings than Vera Wang. Her gowns are the most referenced, the most researched by brides, and the most inspirational each and every season. If Vera does it, the style is sure to be a hit. Her wedding gowns are among the most trendsetting in the bridal industry.

AMSALE ABERRA
For her forever modern style.
The style of an Amsale gown is described as "Forever Modern", by which the designer means that she works with traditional wedding dress features, but with an eye to creating modern classics. Amsale's gowns are updated and sophisticated with clean lines. One of her most famous designs is a simple white silk strapless wedding gown with a blue sash. The style, though simple, was revolutionary, and it became a smash hit that has been imitated by countless bridal gown designers since.

MONIQUE LHUILLIER
Her gowns rock the red carpets and the church aisles!
Monique Lhuillier's gowns are best known for her ability to blend classic bride materials, especially lace, with fashion forward styles. Her iconic looks walk the line between sexy and bridal, which has made them a hit with celebrities (she also now designs red carpet gowns in addition to the bridal collection). Some of the famous brides to wear a Monique Lhuillier gown include Britney Spears, Al Gore's daughter Sarah, and Heidi Montag.

REEM ACRA
For her bridal gowns that are fit for loyalty.
She is known for her remarkable metallic embroidery and intricate beadwork in Swarovski crystals and seed pearls. A Reem Acra wedding gown is formal, glamorous, and sophisticated, with a signature style that invokes royalty. Indeed, royal brides have chosen Acra's European inspired styles for their wedding days.

CAROLINA HERRERA
For successfully dressing brides, debutantes and celebrities for 20 years.
The signature of Carolina Herrera's designs has always been the balance between intricacy and simplicity. Her bridal gowns are renowned for their exquisite details and careful craftsmanship. Herrera also draws from vintage inspiration, such as the 1950s strapless silhouettes, as well as from artists, nature, and other points of interest. A Carolina Herrera wedding gown typically has a timeless style coupled with a special fabric featuring lace, embroidery, or unique draping.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA
For wedding gowns that epitomize luxury!
Oscar de la Renta's bridal gowns are defined by their couture craftsmanship, femininity, charm, and attention to detail. He is the epitome of luxury and elegance in bridal fashion. Not unlike Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta wedding gowns are often strapless with classic silhouettes. He makes great use of embroidered organzas and laces, as well as flounces and ruffles with a touch of Latin flair. Former President Bush's daughter Jenna was one of the best known brides to wear an Oscar de la Renta gown for her wedding. The fairly simple lace gown, while beautiful, was actually a bit more informal than a signature de la Renta wedding dress.

Vera Wang celebrates 20 Years at New York Fashion Week

Vera Wang at New York Fashion Week 2010

Celebrating her 20th anniversary this year, Vera Wang chose to dabble in a

moodier vibe for Spring 2011.

While her signature Wang touches were still lingering — sophisticated silhouettes, embellished adornments and a touch of sparkle; there was an obvious nod to Oriental  and Indian style thanks to origami draping and floral prints.

Pops of colour were varied thanks to gauzy tulle in soft pink, chartreuse and powder blue; while burnt orange made a statement in satin pencil skirts and layered dresses.

It wasn't all about eveningwear though, with slinky, ruched draping in blouson shorts, backless dresses and shell tops providing a fresh alternative to all the structured pieces. If you like your Wang on the more mature side, then this collection will hit the fashion spot.

The Color This Season Is Change - Alexander Wang

Models in Alexander Wang on Day 4 of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

Moving away from his usual color scheme of moody black and dark gray hues, Alexander Wang brings light and looseness to his spring 2011 collection with the theme of a construction job gone awry. Models walked down the runway with clumps of white in their hair in addition to coveralls and sack dresses covered with splashes of color and metallic. The accessories also replicated the collection’s construction theme–handbags were exchanged for modified tool bags and necklaces consisted of thick chain links.

Runway To Reality - Fall 2010 Trends!

After seasons of brights and neons, of digitals and textures, Fall 2010’s fashion sees an influx of sophistication in the form of neutrals like camel and olive and a revolution in lace, fur and menswear! The following are 10 runway trends that will make you look and feel fabulous this fall season!

Camel Coat from Charlotte Ronson Fall 2010

Neutrals

How to Wear It: Take camel to work by mixing it with charcoal or black (Note: camel goes updated
casual when mixed with denim.) Olive works back with denim, camel and black. The neutrals look
chicest mixed with other neutrals or worn tonally.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2010

Longer Skirts

How to Wear It: Graceful long skirts, slim slit skirts, floor-dragging skirts: they all appeared on the
runway in the fall collections. Paired with tailored jackets or chunky knits, these skirts looked fresh
and wearable by more women than the quintessential mini skirt. (Coco was right all along!) Watch
the length and volume so it won't overwhelm you if you are petite. Tall boots, oxfords and platforms
all work with long skirts.

Jennifer Lopez in OTK boots

Over –the-knee boots

How to Wear It: Unlike the black patent "Pretty Woman" boot, the newest over-the-knee boots
come in all colours and fabrics. Look for flat heels, platforms, even stilettos. The younger girls can
pair over-the-knee boots with short skirts and bare legs. Older women look best in OTK boots and
leggings or skinny jeans.

Michael Cors

Menswear

How to Wear It: From matched pantsuits to natty fabrics, menswear is a big trend for fall. Opt for
easy-to-wear matched pantsuits, double-breasted jackets and simple white shirts. Soften the look
with wide-leg trousers and luxe bold jewellery.

Monique Lhuillier

Lace

Black lace in dresses; tops and skirts; was one of the few feminine departures from the minimal
sportswear.
How to Wear It: You may think of black lace as strictly for the holidays (or the bedroom.) But done
right, it's sexy and chic at the same time. Pair a black lace blouse with a slim pencil skirt for an
updated cocktail look or pair a lace camisole or blouse with a menswear pantsuit.

Hats
Jessica Biel in a fedora

How to Wear It: They've been all over the streets in the form of cute straw fedoras, but look for hats
to be major news this fall. Fedoras are the hottest headwear around, and they work for women (and
men) of all ages paired with everything from dresses to jeans. The slouchy knit hat is another big fall
look for younger women to work into their trendy wardrobe.

Animal Prints
Animal Print from Ralph Lauren

How to Wear It: Liven up a basic black wardrobe with a bit of animal print, especially leopard, this
season. Animal-print accessories, shoes and bags are a perfect way to try this trend in small doses.

Vests
Tommy Hilfiger Vest

How to Wear It: Vests in everything from fur to knit -- topped runway looks with a finishing layer.
Monochromatic vests and shirts are chic and slimming; hip-length vests or shorter can be worn
unbuttoned over everything from prints to sweaters. Fur vests (faux works just fine) can add zip to
either casual or dressy pants looks.

Fur
Prabal Gurung Fur

How to Wear It: Fur (and loads of faux fur) appeared in everything from trims on jackets to full-on
coats. A great way to wear it is in a fake fur vest over jeans; many designers and retailers are offering a version of this. Another fun faux fur look is in boot toppers.

Belted
Marc by Marc Jacobs

How to Wear It: The belted waist is one of the easiest updates you can pull off. Start with a jacket,
dress, sweater, cardigan or vest and add a belt (adjust the width to your individual figure, but a
medium to thin width belt looks the trendiest. Big no for the broad ones you stocked up on last
season!)

A Summer Fling? Nanette Lepore and John Forte!

Nanette Lepore

In celebration of the first season of New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, Nanette Lepore announced that Grammy nominated musician, John Forté will compose and perform live as the models walk the runway for her Spring 2011 Fashion Show.
Lepore and Forté are partnering to develop music that will capture the mood of the Spring collection, which will also include Lepore’s swim collection, making its debut on the runway.
“The collaboration between me and John Forté represents the celebration of the arts – music and fashion coming together at Lincoln Center. John is composing music exclusively for my fashion show and his artistic talent reflects the feeling we all have at the moment of wanting something handmade and unique,” explained Nanette.
John Forte
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to work with someone you admire and respect; and I’ve been a fan of Nanette – the person and the designer – for some time now. What we’ve set out to do is inspire each other’s work. In this instance, neither the fashion nor the music is an afterthought. One medium inspires the other, from an initial sketch to a melodic dénouement. Our collaboration is an exceptional moment; one that feels pioneering and yet unforced and organic…a natural progression in an attempt at making something beautiful.” – John Forté
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week kicks off at the Lincoln Centre, New York for the first time on Sept 9!
